Hirayama leads a life in Tokyo that is as simple as it is routine. Every morning he gets up from his futon before sunrise, and a little later his shift begins: every day he cleans the public toilets of the Tokyo Toilet Project, designed by well-known architects, in the Shibuya district. After work, he goes to a soup kitchen, the laundromat or a city pool before his day comes to an end. Occasionally, unexpected encounters provide variety. But Hirayama could hardly imagine his ordinary days to be more perfect.
